Joseph A. Dewoskin, Kansas City Lawyer, Chairs American Bar Association General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Division

CHICAGO, Aug. 23, 2010 — Joseph A. DeWoskin, a Kansas City, Mo.,  lawyer for 19 years, has become chair of the American Bar Association General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Division, representing more than 20,000 members nationwide.  DeWoskin took office as division chair at the close of the 2010 ABA Annual Meeting this month in San Francisco, and will serve a one-year term.

DeWoskin practices primarily in the area of family, military, landlord tenant, and personal injury law, as a solo practitioner in office space shared with six other lawyers as Waits, Brownlee, Berger DeWoskin.  He opened his practice in 2000, after serving nearly nine years on active duty with the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General Corps.  While on active duty he was stationed at Fort Drum, N.Y., deployed to Somalia twice and to Haiti, and participated in relief efforts in Homestead, Fla., after Hurricane Andrew.  While he was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., he was a criminal defense lawyer in the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks, the military’s only maximum security prison.  He has remained in the United States Army Reserve Judge Advocate General’s Corps since leaving active duty in 2000 and currently holds the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Since 1989, DeWoskin has been active in nearly every aspect of leadership in the division.  As a law student he served as the liaison from  the ABA Law Student Division to the General Practice Section, as it was then known.  He has chaired numerous committees, including programming and continuing legal education, Solo Small Firm Day, meetings and corporate sponsorship.  He is a long-standing member of the division’s governing council.  In the greater ABA, DeWoskin has served on the Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund Selection Commission and the Standing Committee on Armed Forces Law.  He also assisted in developing an electronic mailing list for lawyers in or interested in the military and the law (Militarysez).

DeWoskin is a member of the Missouri Bar Association, Kansas Bar Association, the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association, the Johnson County (Kan.) Bar Association, and the Creditor’s Rights and Asset Protection Group.  He received his Bachelor of Arts from Washington Jefferson College, Washington, Pa., in 1988 and his Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri—Kansas City, in 1991.  He is admitted to practice in both Missouri and Kansas.

The ABA General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Division is the only ABA entity exclusively devoted to solo practitioners and small firm lawyers. The division, with more than 20,000 members, serves as the voice of the “Main Street lawyer.”  Solo and small firm practitioners represent half of the nation’s lawyers, and the GP/Solo division provides a community for them within the ABA.

With nearly 400,000 members, the American Bar Association is the largest voluntary professional membership organization in the world.  As the national voice of the legal profession, the ABA works to improve the administration of justice, promotes programs that assist lawyers and judges in their work, accredits law schools, provides continuing legal education, and works to build public understanding around the world of the importance of the rule of law.
