2019 BMW Z4 Headlight, Taillight Design Reaveled by Patent

Even though BMW is teasing the Z4 ahead of its Pebble Beach world debut in August, the G29 is familiar to us thanks to a design patent we’ve talked about in June. Following up on that story, another design patent filed with the USPTO includes the headlights and taillights of the newcomer.

Augmented by light-emitting diodes, the exterior lighting system is sharp and complements the athletic body shell of the G29. The half-brother of the 2019 Toyota Supra will go official on August 23rd during the Monterey Car Week, and as you would expect, the production model will arrive at dealers for the 2019 model year.

Even though the M2 and M2 Competition are similar in size to the 2019 BMW Z4, the automaker can’t make a case for the Z4 M. The most performance-oriented model that will be offered is the Z4 M40i with Competition Package, expected to churn out in the ballpark of 385 PS (380 horsepower) from a 3.0-liter twin-scroll turbo inline-six.

The B58 will be joined by the TwinPower Turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, codenamed B48 and rated at 197 PS (194 horsepower) in its least exciting configuration for this application. One thing the Z4 has going for it is a six-speed manual transmission, something Toyota doesn’t plan to offer on the J29.

Those who prefer to embrace the cruiser character of the Z4 can opt for the ZF 8HP torque-converter automatic transmission, which is standard on the Japanese counterpart. Both models will go into production by the end of the year in Austria, with Magna Steyr taking care of assembly for BMW and Toyota.

The G29 has the weight of the world on its shoulders in more than one aspect, more so when you consider the E89 spawned 115,000 examples of the breed throughout its production life. Add the dwindling interest for sports cars in this segment, and you’ll understand why BMW took the decision to share development costs with Toyota.
