ASSAILANTS ATTACK AID CONVOY
Armed attackers ambushed a six-truck aid convoy on 11 November near the northern Kaga-Bandoro town, where incidents of insecurity have been on the rise lately. A week earlier, gunmen raided an aid convoy headed to Ndélé town, also in the north, robbed the entire cargo of one truck and killed a driver. So far this year, 13 aid workers have been killed in the spate of violence across the country.
OVER 20,000 HAVE FLED VIOLENCE TO DR CONGO
Recurrent attacks in eastern and central regions since May have forced 21,028 people to flee for safety in Bas-Ouele and NordUbangi provinces in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, according to UNHCR’s latest statistics. The refugee agency is providing water, sanitation and hygiene services to the refugees. Tens of thousands of people have been uprooted from their homes this year in an upsurge of violence in several parts of Central African Republic.
CHAD
2.4 MILLION CHILDREN VACCINATED AGAINST POLIO
Some 2.4 million children were vaccinated against polio between 10 and 12 November in 11 of the country’s 23 regions. No polio cases have been reported in Chad since 2012. The disease re-erupted in neighbouring Nigeria a year ago, increasing the risk of contagion across borders owing to population movements. The latest vaccination drive is the seventh and the last this year. Aid agencies stress the need to strengthen routine vaccination to improve coverage.
CHAD
FLOODS AFFECT OVER 1,000 IN FOUR VILLAGES
More than 1,000 people have been affected by flooding in four villages near the capital N’Djamena since October when a river burst its banks. Shelter and blankets are urgently needed to assist 60 families. Crop destruction is also likely to necessitate food assistance. Floods in September affected 65,000 people and destroyed 43,000 hectares of crops in four regions in southern Chad.
NIGER
FOOD INSECURITY REMAINS HIGH IN DIFFA
Around 40 per cent of households in the south-eastern Diffa region are food insecure, an assessment carried out in August and September found. Thirty per cent of the affected are households of refugees and internally displaced people. Global acute malnutrition has hit the 15-per cent emergency threshold in 11 of the region’s 12 districts.
NIGERIA
EIGHTEEN KILLED IN MULTIPLE SUICIDE ATTACKS
Four people strapped with explosives on 15 November killed 18 civilians and wounded 29 others in Muna Gari area near Maiduguri, the capital of the north-east Borno state. The first explosion ripped through an evening prayer gathering and the second was reported about an hour later. Muna area hosts several settlements of displaced people, and has been repeatedly targeted by suicide bombers in recent months.
