Hailee Steinfeld is sinking her teeth into a new kind of role in the new vampire film Sinners.
The actress made her big-screen debut 15 years ago in 2010's True Grit, a breakout performance that earned her an Oscar nomination as a child star. Now 28, Steinfeld is teasing her latest part as a departure from her past projects.
"... This role is far removed from what I've done, but that's part of what drew me to it! I feel like I'm stepping into my own more and more as I get older, and this role mirrors that," she wrote in a March 28 edition of her Beau Society newsletter.
Sinners is directed by Ryan Coogler, known for the Black Panther and Creed films, and stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as twin brothers defending their hometown in the 1930s South from blood-thirsty vampires. Steinfeld plays Mary, a bold love interest to one of Jordan's characters.

In her newsletter, Steinfeld told her fans she had "no hesitation whatsoever" taking on the character.
"The minute I heard Ryan Coogler, I was in. Then I read his script and was like, 'Holy s---, this feels like a massive undertaking.' The story is so complex and layered," wrote Steinfeld. "... I was so fortunate and honored to even be remotely considered."
Elsewhere in her newsletter, Steinfeld called Sinners an "amazing cinematic experience," adding that it is "thrilling and sexy and daring and dangerous — with bold representations."

"That said, use your better judgment," she told a fan who wrote in asking if they could see it with their parents. "But what I would tell you, Jaden, and anyone else, if you can appreciate an incredible film experience for everything that it is, take your whole family." (Steinfeld also noted that Sinners is rated R, for strong bloody violence, sexual content and language.)
After True Grit, some of Steinfeld's other popular movies have included Pitch Perfect 2, Ender's Game, Bumblebee and The Edge of Seventeen, plus she's led TV series like Dickinson and Hawkeye.

In February, Steinfeld told Who What Wear that she is crossing her fingers for more roles like hers in Sinners.
"[Sinners] was truly something that will stay with me for the rest of my life for so many reasons, but one being that this was a role that I had been waiting for, and I hope and pray that I get to do a million more of these because I do think that's part of this next phase of life," she told the outlet.
Sinners is in theaters April 18.
