TAOS, N.M. (KRQE) – A group of Taos teens are making a name for themselves with an impressive invention they hope will soon be useful for the military and law enforcement.
“Hi! My name is Indigo Acosta, and I’m 14. Daniel Cordova, I’m 15. My name is Cameron Gonzales and I’m 15. We’re from Taos, NM and we have invented the NanoForm,” the three teens say in a demonstration video.
The NanoForm was something Indigo Acosta and his friends started developing last year. They got to thinking about how to help family and friends in military and law enforcement because many of them had issues with uniforms.
“We looked for a way to make a breathable, anti-bacterial, protective, fire resistant material,” said Acosta.
With the unique combination of carbon, baking soda, crab shells and other ingredients, the boys came up with a substance to cover fabrics. It makes them essentially indestructible.
“Waterproof, fireproof, or in this case resistant, antibacterial, anti-fungal, antiviral,” said Acosta.
Now, the boys are trying to make their invention widely available. They have even grabbed the attention of the U.S. Army, getting a chance to visit an Army research center in Massachusetts.
“We’re looking towards a spray on so it’s just a simple can you buy and spray it on, then at that point you’re protected. Or we’re looking to integrating into the fabrics entirely,” said Acosta.
There is no timeframe on when that will happen just yet, but Acosta says they do know the name NanoForm, won’t last for long.
They are looking at re-branding to “Protect6.”
“It all has carbon which is on the periodic table as element 6. Protect6 also means protect your back,” said Acosta.
Their invention was so impressive, it landed them a spot on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” last month. Acosta says it was an experience the three of them will never forget.
