Sasha Banks and Alexa Bliss made history by becoming the first female WWE superstars to ever compete in the United Arab Emirates.

The women of Raw and SmackDown Live were not allowed to wrestle when the company toured the Middle Eastern country last year.

But last night 'The Boss' and the Raw Women's Champion took to the ring wearing special ring gear in keeping with local customs.

A clearly emotional Banks burst into tears backstage after the contest at the Zayed Sports City Tennis Stadium in the capital of Abu Dhabi.

She said: "It feels so crazy, because I haven’t had this feeling to be honest in a while and right before I went out, I started crying thinking how huge this is and how much it is bigger than me.

“It was insane, the moment I walked out there, and the moment the announcer said it would be a women’s match, you could hear the crowd care.

“The moment I stood out there and I saw little girls, it made everything worth it. This is what I feel I was put on this earth to do.

“I want to make a change in the world, I want to empower women, I want them to know that their dreams are endless and they can achieve anything.

“And for something so big as today, having the first women’s match in Abu Dhabi, that’s crazy, because last year it wasn’t allowed.

“And this year we are doing it and it’s incredible. I could not hold my emotions in that ring. I was about to cry, right when we locked up and at the end.

“It’s a beautiful day and I am so blessed.”

Bliss retained her title - the first time the Raw Women’s Title was contested in the Middle East region - by beating Banks .

During the match, the crowd chanted “this is hope,” which resonated deeply with the four-time Raw Women’s Champion.

“We’ve come such a long way, not even just in WWE, but in the whole world,” Banks said.

“This is something that I’m going to remember for the rest of my life, and I can’t thank the fans enough, because they inspired me tonight.”

The defending Raw Women’s Champion was equally inspired, thanking the WWE Universe in Abu Dhabi following the title bout.

The significance of the moment wasn’t lost on Triple H, who tweeted a pre-match photo with the caption: “That moment when you make history on a worldwide level…”

Meanwhile Stephanie McMahon commented on how the landmark achievement for the Gulf state was the latest step on WWE's 'Women's Evolution'.
