SINGAPORE — TODAY has won an award for excellence in infographics given by the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) at an awards ceremony in Hong Kong on Wednesday (June 15).

Mr Adolfo Arranz, TODAY’s creative director, was given the Excellence award for an infographic he produced on the crisis faced by the Rohingyas of Myanmar.

Commenting on Mr Arranz’ work, a judge said: “The main image is a powerful focal point of the graphic pulling in the reader into the human tragedy that unfolded in front of our eyes.

“The mapping shows the region-wide scope of the Bay of Bengal migrant crisis, and a range of graphical techniques are utilized to explain various details of the story,” the judge added. “Great work on a terrible series of events in our region.”

The ‘Rohingyas’ painful exodus’ was published in May last year and was a full-page graphic that showed the different routes taken by the Muslim Rohingyas fleeing for safety and the many issues they face after escaping from Rakhine state, including being imprisoned and being held for ransom.

TODAY deputy chief editor Carl Skadian said: “We’re gratified by the recognition afforded us by our peers. We’ll savour this for a moment, before using it as motivation for the task we strive towards every day - serving our readers.”

This is the second time that TODAY has won a SOPA award for Excellence in infographics. In 2014, TODAY won for an interactive infographic on inflatable bicycle helmets.

In March this year, TODAY won four awards for infographics - also by Mr Arranz - from the Society of News Design (SND), a United States-based international organisation recognises news media professionals and visual communicators who make an impact in visual journalism.

Back in November 2014, a digital project on the piracy scourge earned TODAY the silver award at the Asian Digital Media Awards for Best in Data Visualisation Project.
