Apple and Samsung have been fighting a patent infringement lawsuit since 2012 when the former claimed that the Korean company had released devices which infringed on some of its patents. Apple sued Samsung and was subsequently awarded $1.05 billion in damages. However, that wasn’t the end of this as it was only the beginning of this legal tussle which would then go on for several years. The lawsuit recently came full circle and the jury will now meet to deliberate to deliver its final verdict in the case later today.

A new trial was ordered after the first trial in 2012 and the damages were recalculated. Samsung fought it out for as long as it could before paying $548 million to Apple in 2015.

Samsung wasn’t going to let this go without a fight, though. The company went to the U.S. Supreme Court to seek its opinion on whether damages can be collected on all of the profits made from an infringing device or if they could be limited to the value of the infringing components only.

The court ruled that the damages could be limited to the value of the infringing components as well so the case was remanded back to the Northern District Court of California where this legal tussle first started. The court has now been hearing arguments again with Apple asking for $1 billion in damages again while Samsung saying that they should be limited to $28 million and not based on the profits from the infringing devices.

The jury will meet today to discuss and deliver a final verdict in this case. That might happen later today or early tomorrow.
